Sloka - The Hyderabad Waldorf School
Sloka is the first of its kind in India. It was launched by the Education Renaissance Trust - a non-profit organization run by a group of people who wanted to spark off change among teachers and concerned parents who shared a dream about their children. Their aim was to start a school that had sensitivity and a deeper understanding of the child. As the Trust searched for a well-proven alternative system, the Steiner Waldorf School seemed to be the answer. These schools have flourished the world over for over 90 years with a sound pedagogical backing and philosophy.
The school is currently in its fourteenth year. With a strength of 340 students, 36 teachers and 14 support staff members, Sloka is a fully established Waldorf School. The Waldorf curriculum, which has been successfully Indianized by our teachers to suit the needs our children, is followed until Class VIII. The school has affiliation with the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) and our students will pass out of Class X with a CBSE certificate. The medium of instruction is English and we offer Hindi/Telugu as 2nd and 3rd Languages.
Sloka is run as a Non-Profit Trust and there is equal representation in the Trust from Founders, Parents and Teachers of the school. All decisions are made collectively by the Trust members. The school also has an active Parent Council that works closely with teachers and the management.

This year, our focus has been to make our school and the surrounding areas plastic-free. Small steps in different areas have had a visible impact. The Teachers and children make every effort to only use cloth bags. Bins have been placed in different areas of the school to separate plastics from other biodegradable waste. A contract with a recycling company ensures that proper reuse of the plastic is undertaken. A compost pit in the school takes care of waste from our cafeteria. Children have also visited the surrounding village to share their knowledge about the bane of plastic and discuss possibilities of recycling. While on the one hand we have been working on reducing waste, on the other hand, we have also been actively planting shrubs and trees to make our surroundings greener and healthier. Tending to plants is part of our curriculum. We often get to feast on the organically grown fruits from our garden. Our cafeteria serves us delicious meals cooked out of vegetables our children have grown in the school. We strongly believe that our sustained efforts will truly make a difference.
